Your teacher will give you exact instructions about what to practice, how to practise and how much to practice.
Try not to compare your child to others you may be observing having lessons in your teacher’s studio.
All children learn at different rates – and remember the story of the tortoise and the hare?
The tortoise DID win in the end. Do not discuss to you child’s progress in front of him. It is helpful when parents sometimes hand me a notebook each week in which any comments about the week’s practice has been written down very briefly next to each part of their homework assignment.
4- TIME SPENT OBSERVING LESSONS IN THE TEACHER STUDIO |
Time to spent observing lessons in the teacher’s studio is a very successful way to prepare you and your child for his lessons. Your child may not be used to one to one learning, and he will need time to become accustomed to the teacher, the studio, and to learn what will expect from him/hers.
This is the most difficult thing for most parents. We live in a competitive society and we as parents, want our children to excel. Do you remember when your child was a baby and said his first word? What would his reaction have been if those first cautions efforts had been rewarded with disapproval, contempt or indifference? We know that a baby or child placed in the kind of environment just described fail to thrive, adapt socially or maybe even to survive. ! Learning the piano under the Suzuki method is like learning a language, and the same excitement and encouragement MUST be present.
When a little one (or any age) has played Twinkle for 6 month and is still struggling, find something good to say, and find out how to encourage positively and constructively!!. For example your child may have had a difficult time saying a particular word, but rather than putting down his efforts, we tent to think of it as, “baby talk” and accept what he can learn at that particular time of his life. All the while, however, the child hears this word pronounced correctly by those around him and is gently encouraged to produce the same result himself. Eventually the correct word is produced and the whole family joints in the congratulations. Te piano can be learn the same way, and should be!! Do not say, “That sounds just awful” or “You have worked on the song so long I am sick of it “or ‘I don’t see why you can’t remember it’. But changed for the statement: “That sounds better today than yesterday”, or “Each time we play this piece, let’s remember to check our bow fingers curved – today we watch the pinky, tomorrow we’ll watch your thumb, etch.” .
